Bucharest to Istanbul by Train: A Summer Adventure (2026)

The Romanian national rail operator, CFR Călători, has announced the return of its international 'România' service, offering direct trains from Bucharest to Sofia, Istanbul, and Varna until October. This seasonal service, which began on June 12, 2026, provides a comfortable and affordable travel option for those seeking summer holidays in Bulgaria and Turkey. The service's resurgence coincides with a growing trend in Europe towards international rail travel, as more passengers opt for alternatives to short-haul flights and sleeper services. Passengers can book tickets up to 90 days in advance, either online or at railway stations and ticket offices. The routes are also accessible to travelers using Interrail passes. The journeys vary in duration, with the Bucharest-Varna route taking approximately 9 hours and 10 minutes, the Bucharest-Sofia route taking around 9 hours and 55 minutes, and the Bucharest-Istanbul route being an overnight journey of roughly 23 hours and 10 minutes. Second-class tickets start from €27 for the Varna route, €33.60 for Sofia, and €57.80 for Istanbul. This development highlights the increasing popularity of rail travel as a viable and appealing option for both leisure and business travelers, offering a unique blend of comfort, affordability, and the opportunity to explore diverse destinations.
